Watercolor galaxies

By Stephanie Baker

This month at Gather, we had many great classes and events, including acrylic paint pouring, watercolor galaxies, cheese making with celebrity cheesemaker Boss Mouse Cheese, wooden spoon carving, string art and bread making with Crooked Tree Breadworks.

The watercolor galaxies class is something I had been wanting to offer at the studio forever and I finally found the perfect teachers. Wolf + Bear are Kyria and Nigel Smith out of Boyne City and they are known all over the world for their unique, modern watercolor paintings.

In this class we learned the technique of wet-on-wet watercolor painting. Wet-on-wet is where you wet the paper with clean water, then add in paint with your paintbrush and sit back and watch it flow across the paper and mix with other colors.

Each student received a watercolor kit with paintbrushes, paint and a pad of watercolor paper so they could continue practicing what they learned. We are always aware of our environmental impact, so we made the paint kits out of repurposed Altoids tins.

We will be offering another class with Wolf + Bear this summer, so stay tuned to the Gather schedule.  Also coming up in May we have spoon carving, baking classes, candle making, screen printing, and so much more!
